Vascular laboratory tests

An appointment has been made for you to have some or all of the following test(s):

□ Ankle/Brachial Index

□ Tip-Toe Test

□ Arterial Duplex

□ Graft Scan

□ Venous Duplex (leg)

□ Wrist/Brachial Index

□ Venous Duplex (arm)

□ Carotid Duplex

□ Aorta Duplex

□ EVAR Study

 

Appointment Time: 

You will be allocated a specific time to avoid the need to wait. As each patient is allocated a specific 30 minute slot please note that it may not be possible to accommodate latecomers. While you will normally taken at your appointment time, the laboratory occasionally has to change the schedule to cope with medical emergencies and occasionally this may mean that you have to wait.

 

If you cannot attend on the date given please contact the Vascular Laboratory as soon as possible giving a minimum of 24 hours notice so that a new appointment can be arranged for you. This allows us reallocate your appointment time to another patient on the waiting list.

Location: 

• Enter through main hospital entrance.

• Take lift / stairs to 4th Floor.

• Follow signs to Vascular Laboratory / Consulting Private Rooms.

• Take a seat in the 2nd Waiting Room.

 

 

Opening times: 

Monday – Tuesday  7:30am-6pm

Wednesday – Thursday 7am-5:30pm

Friday    7:30am-5:30pm

Closed Daily   12noon-1pm

 

The Non-Invasive Vascular Diagnostics Laboratory provides blood pressure tests and ultrasound scans for patients to assess their arteries and veins.

 

The following is the list of scans offered by this service:

 

1.  Ankle/Brachial Index:

A measurement of blood pressure from both arms, both ankles and toes.

 

No preparation is necessary.

You will be sitting on a couch for the examination which takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

You will be asked to remove jumper, shoes and socks.

 

 

2.  Tip-Toe Test:

A measurement of blood pressure from both arms, and both ankles before and after tip-toe exercise.

 

No preparation is necessary.

You will be sitting on a couch for most of the examination which takes approximately 15-25 minutes.

You will be asked to remove jumper, shoes and socks.

You will be asked to stand & go up and down on your toes for up to 5 minutes.

 

3.  Arterial Duplex:

An ultrasound scan of the arteries of the leg.

 

No preparation is necessary.

You will be sitting on a couch for the examination which may take approximately 30-40 minutes.

You will be asked to remove trousers/skirt, shoes and socks.

 

 

4.  Graft Scan

An ultrasound scan of your arterial bypass graft.

 

No preparation is necessary.

You will be sitting on a couch for the examination which may take approximately 15-20 minutes.

You will be asked to remove trousers/skirt, shoes and socks.

 

 

5.  Venous Duplex (leg):

An ultrasound scan of the veins of the leg.

 

No preparation is necessary.

You will be standing for part of the examination and sitting for the remainder.

The examination takes approximately 20-30minutes.

You will be asked to remove trousers/skirt, shoes and socks.

 

6.  Wrist/Brachial Index:

A measurement of blood pressure from both arms and fingers.

 

No preparation is necessary.

You will be sitting on a couch for the examination which takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

You will be asked to remove jumper.

 

7.  Venous & Arterial Duplex (arm):

An ultrasound scan of the veins of the arm.

 

No preparation is necessary.

You will be sitting on a couch during the examination which takes approximately 20-30minutes.

You will be asked to remove jumper / shirt / blouse.

 

 

8.  Carotid Duplex:

An ultrasound scan of the arteries of the neck.

 

No preparation is necessary.

You will be lying on a couch for the examination which may take approximately 15-20 minutes.

You will be asked to open neck buttons of shirt/blouse.

Polo necks or tight fitting neck wear are not suitable.

 

9.  Aorta Duplex:

An ultrasound scan of the main artery in the tummy.

 

You should fast from midnight for a morning appointment or have a light breakfast if attending for an afternoon appointment.

If necessary have tea & toast no less than 3 hours before your appointment.

You will be lying on a couch for the examination which may take approximately 15-20 minutes.

You may be asked to remove jumper/shirt/blouse and loosen waistband of trousers/skirt.

 

9.  EVAR Study:

An ultrasound scan of the aortic graft in the tummy using a contrast agent which will be injected.

 

You should fast after having a light breakfast. You will be lying on a couch for the examination which may take approximately 15-20 minutes.

You may be asked to remove jumper/shirt/blouse and loosen waistband of trousers/skirt.
